The common cuttlefish, sepia officinalis, is an abundant species on the continental shelf of the Eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the Shetland Islands to the northwest coast of Africa, including the Mediterranean Sea (Kromov et al., 1998).

More than a hundred species of the genus Sepia are known on the shores of East Africa, Eastern Asia, and Meridional and Australia, while on the coasts of North and South America there are none.

O choco comum, sepia officinalis, é uma espécie abundant na plataforma continental do Atlântico Oriental, desde as Ilhas Shetland até à costa noroeste africana, incluindoo Mar Mediterrânico (Kromov. et al., 1998).

São conhecidos mais de uma centena de espécies do género sepia nas costas da África Oriental, Ásia Oriental e Meridonal e Austrália, enquanto que nas costas da América do Norte e do Sul não existe nenhuma.
