In Portugal the population of this species of bat is made up of a few thousand individuals distributed evenly, making it the most common throughout the country.

It is not an exclusively cave dwelling species as it can also breed in buildings (usually abandoned houses) and in caves and mines.

A população nacional desta espécie é constituída por alguns milhares de indivíduos.
Em Portugal, a sua distribuição é contínua em todo o território continental, sendo a espécie do seu género com maiores efectivos no país.

Não é uma espécie exclusivamente cavernícola, pode criar tanto em edifícios (em geral casas abandonadas) como em grutas e minas. Em geral hiberna em abrigos subterrâneos.
