The size of a sparrow, the male is easily identifiable by the black hood, the yellow abdomen and the greenish back. The female, like the male while not in mating season, is a dull brownish-yellow colour, streaked darker on the upper back, fading to off-white on the belly.

It is relatively uncommon in Portugal, with a very localized distribution located mainly in Estremadura, Ribatejo and Algarve.

Do tamanho de um pardal, o macho é facilmente identificável pelo capuz preto, pelo ventre amarelo e pelo dorso esverdeado sem manchas. A fêmea, tal como o macho fora da época de nidificação, é acastanhada, com o dorso estriado e as partes inferiores claras.

O tecelão-de-cabeça-preta é relativamente pouco comum em Portugal, apresentando uma distribuição muito localizada em torno dos locais que colonizou, situados principalmente na Estremadura, no Ribatejo e no Algarve.
